Here's a nice overview video regarding social bookmarking technology & the rationale of why social bookmarking is useful

And here's an overview of probably the most popular social bookmarking website - del.icio.us.

Background to Social Bookmarking

There is a new type of Internet - where users of the Internet collaborate in a myriad of ways.  One of these ways is through a social bookmarking system.  In social bookmarking, users store lists of Internet resources that they find useful. These lists are either accessible to the public or a personal list - and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some social bookmarking systems allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.

Users of a social bookmarking system categorize their resources (web pages, music files, videos, etc.) by using keywords or tags.  Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for these keywords or tags - and rank the resources by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Many social bookmarking services also have implemented algorithms to draw inferences from the tag keywords that are assigned to resources by examining the clustering of particular keywords, and the relation of keywords to one another.

Social Bookmarking has a few good advantages over traditional automated robot-machine systems (like Yahoo or Google search engine spiders).   In social bookmarking, all of the classifications of Internet resources is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource.  This is in contrast to search engine spiders - which use a mathematical system to determine the meaning of a particular resource. Until the search engine spiders are more powerful - with things like semantics - the social bookmarking approach tends, with a large enough sample size in the database - to provide more relevant results for Internet users.

In other words - as people bookmark resources that they find useful, resources that are of more use are bookmarked by more users. This social bookmarking system will thus "rank" a resource based on its perceived utility (# of votes, so to speak). This, many people think, is what provides more relevant results for Internet searches.
